The Opposition has urged the State Government to rollout vaccination opportunities for those attending agricultural shows across WA ahead of the major regional Field Days taking place over the next month.
Opposition Leader Mia Davies said it was incumbent on the Premier to afford regional communities the same opportunities as those in metropolitan WA when it came to increasing vaccine uptake.
“The Premier announced last month that Perth Royal Show attendees can get vaccinated while enjoying a day out – this is a great idea, but it needs to be extended to regional WA,” Ms Davies said
“The Labor Government must ensure all West Australians can access the increased number of vaccines available.”
Ms Davies said regional vaccination rates remained concerningly low and needed attention.
“If cost is an issue in regard to creating these hubs, the Premier should turn to the near $5 billion surplus he sits on, to ensure regional West Australians have equal access to a priceless vaccination that can save lives,” she said.
During Question Time today, Member for Roe Peter Rundle asked the Premier to support vaccination hub proposals for major Field Days.
“The Premier blatantly ignored our suggestion of setting up hubs at regional agricultural shows, despite the Labor Government being aware of the huge attendance rates at the Field Days.
Mr Rundle said there were thousands of people who may not have the same vaccination opportunities as those in the metropolitan areas.
“The Labor Government has a responsibility to create opportunities for rural communities if they genuinely care about keeping all of WA safe – it was disappointing to see the Premier brush aside the suggestion before finding out details or exploring options.”
Mr Rundle urged the Premier and Government to consider the suggestion and put plans in place for the upcoming Show season.
