Yet another plan to address the housing crisis has been left to languish by the Labor Government, with the Heart of Beaconsfield project yet to get off the ground.
The plan to redevelop the Davis Park area has been in the works since 2015 but development hasn’t even started, nor has a target date been set for completion.
“Perth currently has a rental vacancy rate of just 1%,” said Shadow Minister for Housing Steve Martin MLC.
“For the Minister to allow the continual demolition of homes without starting any new development in the Davis Park area is appalling.
“Minister Carey has said he is suffering from sleepless nights, but I think he is asleep at the wheel.
“He has said that no one is tendering for social housing projects. If this is the case, why are they continuing to demolish homes?
The number of vacant government-owned properties doubled from 929 in March 2021 to 1,805 in March this year.
“According to the last available statistics, over 1,800 government have been sitting empty when we have nearly 35,000 people on the public housing waitlist,” continued Mr Martin.
“Just the other week Minister Carey announced a delay to East Perth Common Ground facility, a plan that was intended to support those suffering from homelessness. This is just another stalled housing plan under this Minister.
“Under the Minister’s watch, the rental vacancy rate has fallen to continuous record-lows, the public housing waitlist has skyrocketed, and the number of people experiencing homelessness remains high.”
