Shadow Spokesperson for Health Libby Mettam says the McGowan Government must commit funding beyond the business case, for this vital health infrastructure project.
“Given the Federal Government have backed the previous Liberal National Governments commitment to this centre, the State Labor Government must now do the same,” said Shadow for Health Libby Mettam.
“The Premier is creating unnecessary uncertainty surrounding the future of this project, given it already is Federally funded.
“While the support for the business case was welcome, the future of this project by The Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research should not be in doubt and the McGowan Government should ensure this project is delivered.
“With over 50,000 people living with cancer in WA, representing 14% of hospital admissions it is clear there is a need for this project to be supported by the state.
“Furthermore, it will support the state’s research capacity, and as a one-stop shop would bolster WA’s research capacity.
“This project is a no-brainer, and it is concerning the McGowan Government continues to raise uncertainty about the future of this project.
“There should no longer be a cloud of uncertainty around this project.
“We should be investing in this research capacity, and we know that for every dollar invested in medical research in Australia, $3.90 is returned, representing a significant opportunity for the state.
“The combination of cancer treatment alongside on-site cancer treatment represents as significant opportunity for the health journey and outcomes of patients in this state and beyond.”
