Shadow Justice Minister Tjorn Sibma has slammed Attorney General John Quigley for failing to protect the Western Australian community from dangerous and violent sex offenders.
Dangerous offender Tyrone Corbett was apprehended today after being on the run for six days after he removed his GPS tracker last Friday.
“It is the McGowan Government’s laws that allowed Mr Corbett, a known dangerous sex offender, to be free for nearly a week in the Western Australian community,” Mr Sibma said.
“Thankfully we have outstanding Police who were able to apprehend Mr Corbett, however then significant resources needed to affect that capture would not have been required to be diverted from other important policing duties if Mr Corbett had been behind bars in the first place.”
Mr Sibma said the paramount principle in the application of the law should always be the safety of the community and called for urgent amendments to the High Risk Offenders Act were required to ensure offenders like Mr Corbett are not released into the community.
“Under Mr Quigley’s laws, the chain of justice may only be as strong as the band which attaches the electronic monitoring device to the individual,” he said.
“This is not acceptable to the community and it is not acceptable to the Opposition, yet it appears to be perfectly acceptable to the McGowan Labor Government.”
