Leader of the Nationals WA
Shadow Minister for Mines and Petroleum
The Opposition has welcomed Alcoa’s decision not to proceed with exploratory drilling operations in the Perth Hills.
Shadow Minister for Mines and Petroleum Shane Love MLA said Alcoa’s confirmation that the local government areas of Armadale, Beverley, Kalamunda, Mundaring, and York have been removed from its updated mining plan provides welcome certainty for local residents.
“The Opposition stood side-by-side with the Perth Hills community in opposing mining in this important and ecologically sensitive area, and we are pleased to see people power and common-sense has prevailed,” Mr Love said.
“While I understand these areas were only ever identified for exploration, not mining, today’s decision by Alcoa offers meaningful reassurance for families, businesses, and community groups,” Mr Love said.
“Feedback from locals over the past year has been clear – The Perth Hills is simply not a suitable location for bauxite mining, and I am encouraged by ongoing conversations with Alcoa that they will continue to focus their exploration and future bauxite operations further south.
Mr Love said the decision was a win for local communities and demonstrated the importance of proper community consultation.
“Alcoa has certainly taken on board the views of the Perth Hills communities, and this is positive news,” Mr Love said.
“Today’s decision shows the strength of people power and is a reminder to any company in WA.
Whether it relates to mining, renewable energy projects, or other major developments across WA, decision-making must not come without proper community consultation, support, and benefit.”
Mr Love also acknowledged Alcoa’s longstanding contribution to WA’s economy.
“Alcoa have been a significant employer and investor in our State for more than six decades,” he said.
“Bauxite remains an important strategic resource and the company continues to play a key role in WA’s economic future and the broader global energy transition.”
Mr Love said the Opposition looks forward to receiving a full briefing from Alcoa later this week to better understand the detail of the company’s updated plans.
