Shadow Minister for Local Government Kirrilee Warr MLA has called for future governments to support wealth where it is generated, after it was revealed the Cook Labor Government would not support an amendment proposed by The Nationals WA to assist regional local governments impacted by changes to their ability to raise certain rates.
The Local Government amendment (Rating of Miscellaneous Mining Licences) Bill 2025 which is expected to be debated in the Legislative Council in Parliament today, aimed to block local governments’ ability to rate miscellaneous mining licences, which had been found lawful by the Supreme Court.
The Nationals WA amendment would have allowed affected local governments to apply to utilise funds through Royalties for Regions.
A letter had been sent to the State Government over Labor’s position on the proposed amendments, which was considered by the Labor Caucus. The Local Government Minister has confirmed the Royalties for Regions amendment would not be supported by Labor.
“The response from the Minister means the amendment cannot succeed, and local governments across regional WA will be disappointed,” Ms Warr said.
“As a responsible party of government, The Nationals WA recognise it would be reckless to push on with the amendment, knowing it cannot succeed in both Houses of Parliament.
“This would leave a situation where there is uncertainty around the ratings system on miscellaneous licences at a time when rates and budgets are being set.”
“The Cook Labor Government has made it clear: local governments, particularly those in regional WA, are not a priority.
“Future governments must support communities where the wealth is generated, instead of leaving them out of pocket with no means of assistance.”
Leader of The Nationals WA and Shadow Minister for Mines and Petroleum Shane Love MLA said “The Cook Labor Government’s decision is disappointing for local governments across the state, but The Nationals WA understand the need to provide clarity for both the local government and mining sectors going forward.”
“Governments should be working with these communities to ensure their needs are attended to, instead their concerns are falling on deaf ears.
“The Nationals WA will continue to advocate for regional communities across the state to ensure their voices are heard.”
