Shadow Minister for Fisheries, Kirrilee Warr MLA, is encouraging Western Australia’s fishing community to make their voices heard ahead of next week’s Parliamentary debate on a motion to establish an inquiry into the future of fishing in Western Australia.

The motion, to be debated in the Legislative Council next week, follows strong community support for greater scrutiny of fisheries management, with more than 27,000 Western Australians signing a petition tabled by The Nationals WA in February calling for an inquiry.

Ms Warr said the inquiry would provide an important opportunity for fishers, regional communities, industry representatives and experts to contribute to a long-term vision for the future of fishing in Western Australia.

“This is a significant moment for everyone who cares about the future of fishing in our State,” Ms Warr said.

“Whether you’re a commercial fisher, recreational fisher, charter operator, tackle shop owner or simply someone who enjoys getting out on the water with family and friends, this inquiry has the potential to shape the future of fishing for generations to come.”

The proposed inquiry would examine the long-term sustainability and management of Western Australia’s fisheries, including the impacts of marine parks, renewable energy developments, illegal fishing, shark depredation and other emerging challenges affecting fish stocks and access.

It would also consider whether the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development is adequately resourced to meet its responsibilities.

“More than 27,000 Western Australians have already spoken by signing the petition calling for an inquiry,” she said.

“Now is the time to ensure those voices are heard in Parliament.

“I encourage everyone who supports a strong future for fishing in Western Australia to contact Members of the Legislative Council and ask them to support this motion.

“The Nationals and Liberals will back this motion, now we need the Government and Members of the crossbench to back it too.

“The future of fishing matters to thousands of families, businesses and communities across Western Australia. Next week’s debate is an important opportunity to ensure their voices are part of the conversation.”
