Lachlan Hunter MLA
Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food

Western Australia’s Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food, Lachlan Hunter MP, says the confirmation of H5 avian influenza in a wild bird near Esperance is a serious biosecurity development that will be closely watched by producers and regional communities across the State.

“Today’s confirmation of H5 avian influenza in a wild bird near Esperance is a significant development for Western Australia and one that will understandably concern our poultry, egg and broader agricultural industries,” Mr Hunter said.

“My immediate thoughts are with producers, processors and regional communities who will be closely monitoring developments over the coming days and weeks.”

“At this stage, authorities have advised there is no evidence of infection in commercial poultry flocks and no evidence of mass mortality events. That is welcome news, but the situation remains serious and requires continued vigilance.”

Mr Hunter said Western Australia’s strong biosecurity systems would be critical in managing the response.

“This detection highlights the importance of maintaining strong biosecurity measures and robust surveillance systems to protect Western Australia’s agricultural industries and unique wildlife.”

“Western Australia’s poultry and egg industries contribute significantly to our economy and food security, and protecting those industries must remain a priority.”

Mr Hunter also acknowledged the work of frontline responders involved in the response effort.

“I want to acknowledge the veterinarians, biosecurity officers, wildlife carers and frontline personnel who are working to monitor and respond to this detection.”

Mr Hunter urged the public to follow official advice and avoid handling sick or dead birds.

“This is an evolving situation, and I encourage all Western Australians to follow official biosecurity advice and report any concerns through the appropriate channels.”

“As Shadow Minister for Agriculture, I will continue engaging with industry stakeholders and remain in close contact with industry and biosecurity authorities as more information becomes available.”

Any form of avian influenza is a reportable disease. Report any unusual mortalities, disease signs or reduced egg production to the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD)
or the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
