Labor’s dingo deal is creating uncertainty for livestock producers

Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food

Shadow Minister for Agriculture and Food, Lachlan Hunter MP, says the renewed debate over dingo management is exactly what the Opposition predicted when the Cook Labor Government agreed with the Animal Justice Party and the Greens to review Western Australia’s dingo management framework through the Biosecurity Council.

Mr Hunter said Labor had opened the door to activist politics when it should have backed livestock producers from the outset.

“This is exactly what the Opposition warned would happen.

“Labor chose to do a deal with the Animal Justice Party and the Greens rather than stand unequivocally with Western Australia’s livestock producers.

“The Minister had every opportunity to shut this down from the outset. Instead, Labor has created confusion and uncertainty across the agricultural sector.”

Mr Hunter said the developments, including concerns over wild dog control on more than 340,000 hectares of DBCA-managed land, show why producers are demanding certainty and clear commitments from the Government.

“Wild dogs don’t recognise property boundaries, and neither should effective pest management.

“The Minister can no longer dismiss producers’ concerns as hypothetical. The consequences of opening this debate are already being felt on the ground.

“The Minister must show leadership and publicly rule out any weakening of Western Australia’s wild dog management framework.

“Our livestock industry deserves science-based policy, and practical pest management; not political deals or activist agendas.”

Mr Hunter said The Nationals WA would continue standing with producers to protect livestock, regional jobs and practical wild dog control.
