McGowan Government go-slow on Geraldton Hospital continues

The Opposition Alliance says it is extraordinary that after six years, the redevelopment plans for the Geraldton Health Campus are still in the Expressions of Interest stage.

“This Premier keeps telling us health is his priority, but the facts prove he is all talk and no action,” Shadow Health Minister Libby Mettam said.

“The upgrades promised by the McGowan Government during the 2017 election campaign will be outdated by the time they are completed.”

Ms Mettam said redevelopment plans were initiated under the Barnett Government and were about meeting projected service demands for 2024-2025 levels, however the earliest possible completion date is now 2026.

“We’ve known for many years now that Mark McGowan cannot build anything on time or on budget but this is an especially bitter pill for the people of the Mid-West who have been waiting for these essential hospital upgrades for six years,” Ms Mettam said.

“Mark McGowan was only ever offering a cut-price upgrade and he hasn’t even been able to deliver that after six years.

“In 2017, the Government of the day said a $138.5 million upgrade was required for the Geraldton Health Campus, while Mark McGowan said the people of the Mid-West could get by with a $73.3 million upgrade.

“Now he seems to be saying they don’t even need that in any sort of timely manner.

“There is no doubt the people of the Mid-West are being treated as second-class citizens and will be getting second-rate health care because the McGowan Government will not prioritise their needs.”
