Kirrilee Warr MLA
Shadow Minister for Fisheries
Shadow Minister for Fisheries Kirrilee Warr MLA says the Cook Labor Government’s mistreatment of WA’s fishing sector extends beyond demersal fishing, with Western rock lobster fishers still waiting on legislative reform despite a clear election promise.
The WA Nationals and WA Liberals took policies to the 2025 State Election backing the crayfishing industry, including commitments to provide greater security through 10 year licence provisions to deliver long-term stability for businesses.
Labor matched this commitment, but more than a year on, there has been no action from the Government.
“Our Western rock lobster fishers have been left in limbo despite being assured their industry was a priority,” Ms Warr said.
“These fishers have been waiting patiently for progress, yet the Government has remained silent.”
“It’s straight out of Labor’s playbook — big announcements with no plan to deliver.”
“This mismanagement of the portfolio is a disgrace, and nothing is being done to restore confidence in the sector.”
On Thursday, Nationals Member for Western Australia Hon. Rob Horstman MLC questioned the Fisheries Minister on the status of the legislation.
Ms Warr said it was Opposition pressure that forced Labor to make the original commitment, and it was disappointing the same pressure was now required to bring reform to life.
“History shows when it comes to fishing, the Cook Labor Government does not care,” she said.
“For a decade, they sat idle on demersal fishing and now they are doing it again.”
“My National and Liberal colleagues and I will continue to stand up for fishers across the state and fight for real progress in the sector.”
