Kirrilee Warr MLA
Shadow Minister for Local Government
Shadow Minister for Local Government Kirrilee Warr has welcomed the appointment of Tony Brown as WA’s inaugural Local Government Inspector, saying the role is long overdue and essential to addressing ongoing issues in the sector.
Mr Brown brings more than 20 years of experience in local government, most recently serving as an executive officer at the WA Local Government Association (WALGA).
“Tony understands the challenges facing local governments across WA and will bring much-needed stability to the sector,” Ms Warr said.
“His strong record at WALGA is well recognised, and I wish him every success in this important new role.”
Ms Warr noted the role was first flagged several years ago but was only now being implemented by the Cook Labor Government.
She questioned whether earlier action might have prevented dysfunction like that seen at the City of Nedlands.
“We’ve seen this year alone that without proper oversight, issues within local government can cause ongoing trouble, and it’s the local community who pays the price,” she said.
“It was revealed during budget estimates that if the office had been established sooner, it could have stepped in before problems escalated.”
“This could have potentially avoided the need for three administrators to be appointed at Nedlands, which has been an expensive exercise for Western Australian taxpayers, and has left the people of Nedlands without elected representation,” Ms Warr said.
“While I welcome today’s appointment, the real test will be whether this office can act quickly and effectively to improve the accountability, decision-making and transparency of the sector.”
