Kirrilee Warr MLA
Shadow Minister for Local Government
Shadow Minister for Local Government Kirrilee Warr MLA is hopeful this week’s WALGA Local Government Convention can spruik ideas to empower the sector, urging changes to be made with them and not to them.
This year’s convention focused on today’s decision making and how it can influence the future.
Ms Warr said it was a sentiment echoed during the event.
“Local governments play an important role, and from discussions this week it’s clear they want to be a part of the conversation going forward,” she said.
“This top-down approach from the State Government is not working, with local governments telling me they’re feeling sidelined.
“Stronger relationships between the State and local governments are needed, where they need to be treated as equals and have a seat at the table.”
Ms Warr highlighted this during her discussion on the State of Play panel, discussing the priorities within local governments.
Among the discussions were long-term solutions, respect for local decision making, and joint action to combat issues facing the community.
Ms Warr said there was an opportunity for the State Government to listen.
“The sector’s sustainability relies on the State Government to be aware of the issues and be working towards a solution,” she said.
“Things like properly allocating resources for the community, having consistent frameworks for rating, and giving local governments a voice would all go a long way to ensuring long-term success.”
